1881-S Morgan Silver DollarBy 1881 the San Francisco Mint had grown used to the demand to mint as many Morgan Silver Dollars as possible. They turned out another record number of coins this year, with a total of 12.7 million pieces struck. Thing is, many of the coins struck were either introduced into commerce in the old West or were sent overseas for goods exchange. Not many of these coins survived the years unscathed. Many of the coins that did escape circulation were stored in vaults - some of them for more than 50 years. Of the coins that were stored in bags, some took on a reaction that allowed the silver to turn colors inside the bags. Some of these coins are revered as the nicest Morgan Silver Dollars struck.
