Why add the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS64 Green Label to your collection?

Many collectors have the 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar to thank for their introduction to the most collected series in American Coinage. This example was graded Mint State 64 (MS64) by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and qualified for NGC's prestigious Green Label, an exciting new label that was the result of a collaboration between the grading company and one the leading numismatic distributors in the United States, Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA).

  • This coin was awarded NGC's exciting Green Label.
  • 12,760,000 of these Morgans were struck!
  • This Morgan was struck on a .900 fine silver planchet that contains .7734 oz. of bullion.
  • The San Francisco Mint was well-known for striking high quality Morgan Silver Dollars.
  • The 1881-S is one of the best struck Morgan Silver Dollars in the entire series.
  • An English immigrant named George T. Morgan was the designer of this Silver Dollar. Mr. Morgan later became the 7th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.

The Morgan Silver Dollar Design

Obverse: The model for the depiction of Liberty featured on the obverse was Philadelphia teacher Anna Wills Williams. She was said to have the perfect profile for the job by Mr. Morgan.

Reverse: Morgan's reverse design was an entirely new depiction of an eagle with spread wings. The eagle was surrounded by a wreath of laurel. The motto "In God We Trust" appears over the eagle.

MS64 Green Label Stunner

The Mint State 64 grade is characterized by attractive eye appeal and good luster and is a great place for collectors to focus while acquiring exemplary examples of Morgan Dollars. The Green Label is reserved for coins that prior to being submitted to NGC for encapsulation and certification were selected by RARCOA in their efforts to find superior quality examples including attributes such as eye-appeal, strike, luster, or toning. Only coins that are deemed to have these exceptional features per RARCOA's strict standards are awarded NGC's Green Label, allowing collectors to quickly and easily recognize superior quality coins that have undergone this additional scrutiny in addition to NGC's certification process.
