Why buy tihs 1881-S Silver Morgan Dollar?

The Morgan Silver Dollar is beloved by collectors and non-collectors alike. By showing Liberty as an American style figure and depicting her wearing a crown made from one Southern crop and one Northern one, Morgan's coin helped to form a new, unified image for a nation that was divided by a Civil War not long before the coin was first issued. This piece from the San Francisco Mint comes from the fourth issue in the series.

  • The Morgan Silver Dollar is among the most beloved coins in American history.
  • This coin was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver.
  • This example bears the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint.
  • Morgan depicted Liberty as an American style figure.
  • This coin was part of a mintage of 12,760,000 pieces.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Mint State 63.

Featuring George T. Morgan's Classic Liberty Design

Obverse: George T. Morgan broke new ground with his obverse design by showing Liberty as an American style figure instead of a Greek style one. Shown in left-side profile, she wears a Phrygian cap, a crown of cotton and wheat, and a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars, the statutory motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the date, "1881."

Reverse: On the reverse, a heraldic eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch while partially encircled by an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the bird's head. Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."

Well Preserved MS63
