This piece was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .9000 fine silver. It was one of nearly 12.8 million struck in Philadelphia that year and has an actual silver weight of .7734 Troy oz. Classic Designs by George T. MorganBoth faces of this Morgan 1881 Silver Dollar were designed by George T. Morgan. The obverse is admired not only for its beauty but also because Morgan departed from the tradition of using a Greek-style model for Liberty, instead choosing Anna Willess Williams, an American one. Liberty is shown in left-side profile. She has a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom from slavery, on her head, while her long, curly hair covers the back of her neck. She also dons a crown of cotton and wheat, two staple American crops. On the reverse is an eagle spreading its wings upward. "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed between them. The eagle holds arrows, symbols of military readiness, in one talon, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in the other. Uncirculated Mint State 63The graders at the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) found that this coin had a weak to average strike, as well as moderate hairlines and abrasions.
