Why order this Silver 1881 Morgan Dollar?
This 1881 Morgan comes from the fourth issue of one of the most beloved coin series in American history. First issued not long after the Civil War, the series helped the recently divided nation to heal, offering rich symbolism of identity and unity. Part of a mintage of 9,162,991 pieces, this coin was struck from 26.73 g of .900 fine silver.
Featuring the Patriotic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
Both faces of this coin bear designs of George T. Morgan, for whom the series is named. The obverse features a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan chose an American style model for the figure, breaking with the tradition of showing her as a Greek style figure. On her head are a Phrygian cap, a ribbon, and a crown. The cap indicates that she is a freed slave, while the crown represents unity. It is made up of a Southern crop, cotton, and a Northern crop, wheat. This image is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1881," and thirteen stars. The stars represent America's original states.
A heraldic eagle spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The arrows serve as reminders that America is ready, willing, and able to defend her values, while the olive branch expresses a desire for peace. The eagle is partially encircled by an open wreath, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
Uncirculated MS64
The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin a grade of Mint State 64. That means that the coin has at least an average strike and lacks any traces of wear.
