Why buy this 1881 Silver Morgan Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar Series is perhaps the best known coin in American history. Countless Americans have collections of Morgans, including many who otherwise do not collect coins. The historic pieces often get passed on for generations, and they were important symbols of unity and identity for a nation that was divided violently shortly before their first issue. This piece comes from the fourth year of the series. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a .7734 oz planchet of .900 fine silver. Part of a mintage of 9,163,000 pieces, this coin remains in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Featuring the Groundbreaking Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
This series takes its name from the man who designed both of its faces, George T. Morgan. The coin's obverse features a historic Liberty design, which Morgan created using Anna Willess Williams as his model. Williams was an American-style figure, which meant a break in the tradition of depicting the figure in a Greek style. Her long, curly hair is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave. Also on her head are a ribbon that bears her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown made from cotton and wheat. The crown symbolizes unity, as it consists of one Southern crop and one Northern one. Encircling the image along the rim are two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1881," and thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
A heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The arrows serve as reminders to all that America is prepared to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates that the nation would prefer peace. The bird spreads its wings toward the rim. In the "V" shape that they create is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." An open wreath partially encircles the bird. Along the rim are two inscriptions, one that notes the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and one that offers the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
