Why purchase this impressively graded 1881 Gold Liberty Head Half Eagle coin?
The U.S. Mint issued the Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle coin series for nearly seven decades, beginning in 1939. Imagery of the series, which was adapted for the $10 Eagle and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle gold coin series issued during the same time period, is credited to sculptor Christian Gobrecht, who served as the Mint's third Chief Engraver from 1840 until 1844. The Half Eagle Liberty Head series was retired in 1908 as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's sweeping redesign of the nation's circulating coinage.
Gorgeous Patriotic Imagery
Obverse: The obverse features a personification of Liberty as a young woman, with her hair elegantly gathered and entwined with a beaded ribbon. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, with "LIBERTY" inscribed upon her coronet and the year of issue "1881" below.
Reverse: A heraldic eagle is illustrated on the reverse, clutching three arrows and an olive branch, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" inscribed on an unfurled parchment above. The national bird is encircled by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "FIVE D."
