Why purchase this 1881 $5 Gold Liberty Head Half Eagle coin?

The U.S. Mint annually issued the Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle series from 1839 until 1908, a period of nearly seventy years. The series' imagery, which was created by third U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, was shared with the simultaneously issued $10 Eagle and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle gold coin series. The most significant design change during the series' lifetime was instituted in 1866, when the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse to instill hope and unity to the nation after the American Civil War.

  • This Liberty Head Half Eagle coin was struck in 1881 at the Philadelphia Mint.
  • The $5 denomination coin contains 0.2419 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
  • The coin is accompanied by the NGC's prestigious Green Label.
  • The 21.60 mm diameter coin is part of a 5,708,802 piece mintage.
