Why purchase this 1881 $5 Gold Liberty Head Half Eagle coin?
The U.S. Mint annually issued the Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle series from 1839 until 1908, a period of nearly seventy years. The series' imagery, which was created by third U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, was shared with the simultaneously issued $10 Eagle and the $2.50 Quarter Eagle gold coin series. The most significant design change during the series' lifetime was instituted in 1866, when the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse to instill hope and unity to the nation after the American Civil War.
