Why purchase this Morgan 1880-S Silver Dollar?
Collectors looking for an early issue Morgan to add to their collections would do well to pick up this 1880-S piece. The coin was part of the third issue of the iconic series. Today, Morgan dollars are often saved and passed down from one generation to the next even by people who collect no other coins. This piece bears the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint, where it was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It is part of a mintage of 8,900,000 pieces.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Beloved Liberty Design
The coin's obverse bears one of the most important designs in the history of American numismatics. George T. Morgan, who designed both faces of this coin, rendered Liberty in left-side profile. What is particularly noteworthy is that he chose Anna Willess Williams, an American style figure, as his model. This broke from the tradition of using Greek style models for Liberty. She dons a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, a crown of cotton and wheat, and a Phrygian cap. That type of cap is traditionally worn by freed slaves. The crown symbolizes national unity, as it consists of a Southern crop and a Northern one. Along the rim are two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1880," which are joined by thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
The reverse bears a heraldic eagle. The bird stretches its wings toward the rim in a V-shape, within which is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The bird holds arrows, which represent America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace, in its talons. Partially encircling the bird is an open wreath. Along the rim are a pair of rim inscriptions that provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
