The U.S. Mint began producing the Morgan Silver Dollar series in 1878. The coin's imagery is the most well-known design of George T. Morgan, the sculptor who would become the seventh Chief Engraver of the Mint in 1917.
Morgan's Silver Dollar Design
Obverse: Lady Liberty is illustrated on the obverse in a classically styled profile portrait, wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with the word "LIBERTY," as well as an array of leaves, flowers and grains. The image is surrounded by the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1880," along with thirteen stars.
Reverse: The reverse features an eagle with its wings outstretched, holding an olive branch and three arrows in its talons, with a laurel wreath below. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR," with San Francisco's "S" Mint mark near the wreath's ribbon.
Stunning Mint State 63 with a NGC Green Label
This San Francisco struck 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar was reviewed by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and deemed to be in Mint State 63 condition. The coin is sharply struck, featuring a sensational amount of original Mint luster and outstanding eye appeal. The silver dollar is encapsulated in a NGC protective holder with a Green certification label. To earn the prestigious Green label, a coin must not only pass NGC's exacting standards for grading and authentication, but prior to being submitted for grading, it must also also meet additional requirements established by RARCOA (Rare Coin Company of America) for qualities of strike, luster and eye appeal. Only coins that meet RARCOA's strict standards will receive NGC's Green Label.
