This Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar was graded and encapsulated by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). It features the desirable New York Bank Hoard Label which is popular with collectors. The San Francisco branch of the U.S. Mint is one of the most fabled in the history of American Coinage. Collectors of all skill levels seek out coins struck at this famous facility. This coin is struck on a 90% coin silver planchet which contains .7734 oz. of bullion.
Desirable and Beautiful Design
The obverse features Liberty in left facing profile. She is featured wearing a coronet inscribed with "Liberty." The reverse features a heraldic eagle. Upon release the coin was nicknamed "Buzzard Dollar" by detractors who didn't appreciate the svelte appearance of the eagle. Eventually, the public accepted what would become the most collected coin design in American Numismatics.
BU coins are "mint state" and exhibit original surfaces and mint luster even after more than 135 years! This coin was discovered in a lower Manhattan bank vault in 2018. The New York Bank Hoard was the collection of a Wall Street executive. These coins were purchased during the GSA auctions in the 1960s and remained in their original canvas bags.
