Why Make This MS63 1880-O Morgan Dollar the Next Addition to Your Collection?
The Morgan silver dollar is one of the most widely recognized classic U.S. coins. This is partially due to their association with the Wild West era of United States history. Production began in 1878; the coin shown here was struck in 1880 at the New Orleans Mint. This silver dollar had a modest mintage of 5,305,000.
Patriotic Symbols on Obverse and Reverse by Morgan
While these coins are called Morgan dollars, the woman depicted on the obverse is actually Liberty. The date is just below her among 13 stars. These coins are named after the artist who created the designs, George T. Morgan.
A bald eagle is depicted in a unique position on the reverse. It's holding its chest out and its wings high as it grasps a bundle of arrows and an olive branch with its talons. The "O" mintmark is in the lower portion of the design, just above the face value.
