Why purchase this VAM-48 variety 1880-O Morgan Silver Dollar?
Beginning in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar was produced by the U.S. Mint for a total of twenty-eight years, providing today's collectors with nearly one hundred different date/Mint mark combinations to acquire. In addition, the series' extensive die varieties were categorized by authors Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis into a list of "VAM" numbers in 1976. This New Orleans minted 1880 Morgan Dollar is authenticated as a VAM-48 variety, which is characterized by a thick tail feather gouge, dubbed a "hangnail," on the reverse. The coin is included on the list of "Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties" compiled by Dr. Michael S. Fey and Jeff Oxman in 1996.
