Featuring the Beloved Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
Obverse: Like the reverse, the obverse was designed by George T. Morgan. Morgan made a historic decision, choosing an American-style model for Liberty instead of a Greek-style model, as was tradition. He shows her in left-side profile wearing a ribbon and a Phrygian cap. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1880/9."
Reverse: The national bird spreads its wings while clutching arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. It is partially encircled by an open wreath, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. The image is encircled by two rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR." George T. Morgan was the US Mint's seventh Chief Engraver. This Silver Dollar, which bears his name, is his most famous numismatic contribution.
