Obverse: The coin's obverse features a left-side portrait of Liberty by James Longacre. Longacre shows the figure wearing a beaded coronet that bears an inscription of her name. Rim inscriptions provide hte name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the date, "1879."
Reverse: On the reverse, the Roman numeral 3, "III," is inscribed in large font at the center. This notes the face value of the coin. It is encircled by a wreath that has a bow at the bottom.
