Why add this Silver 1879-S Morgan Dollar to your collection?
This 1879-S Silver Morgan Dollar would make a fantastic addition - or start - to any budding collection of America's favorite coins. Perhaps more than any other coin, Morgans have earned a place in the American psyche. Many families pass them down as heirlooms for generations. This Morgan was struck at the San Francisco Mint, as evidenced by its "S" Mint mark on the reverse. Like other Morgan Dollars, it was struck from .7734 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver.
Groundbreaking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
The Morgan Silver Dollar gets its name from George T. Morgan, who designed both faces of it. On the obverse is his Liberty design, which broke with numismatic tradition thanks to Morgan's selection of an American-style model, Anna Willess Williams, rather than a Greek-style model. Morgan shows Liberty in left-side profile wearing a crown of cotton and wheat, a Phrygian cap, and a ribbon that bears her name. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) joins thirteen stars and the date along the rim.
On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings upward as it clutches arrows and an olive branch, the former symbolizing military readiness and the latter symbolizing peace. A laurel wreath wraps from just under one wing to just under the other, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the eagle's wings.
