The San Francisco Mint began striking coinage in 1854, in response to the California Gold Rush. Years later, after passage of the wasteful Bland-Allison Act, U.S. Mint officials determined that minting a large silver dollar coin was the best way to use the huge amount of silver that the government was required to purchase every month as a result of the Act. Each coin contains .7734 oz. of silver which was struck on a 90% pure planchet.

Classic Morgan Dollar

This series has one of the most legendary and beloved designs ever produced in American coinage. The obverse features the profile of Lady Liberty facing left. The reverse bears the legally mandated image of a bald eagle. This eagle has spread wings and holds arrows and an olive branch in his talons. This timeless coin was designed by legendary U.S. Mint engraver George T. Morgan.
