1879 marked the second year of release of the United States Mint's Morgan Silver Dollar series. Designed by George T. Morgan, coins of the series were struck until 1921 when it was replaced by the Peace Dollar. Magnificent Patriotic Design
Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse, her hair entwined with a garland of oak leaves, wheat grains and cotton blossoms tamed by a "LIBERTY" inscribed crown and a Phrygian cap. "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1879" and thirteen stars surround the portrait.
An eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows is illustrated on the reverse, with a laurel wreath and San Francisco's Mint mark "S" below. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR" accompany the image.
