Why add the 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS66 Green Label to your collection?

The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar at the high Mint State 66 (MS66) level and awarded it their prestigious Green Label which is only given to coins of exceptional quality.

  • The Morgan dollar is one of the most widely collected and popular coinage issues in the history of the United States.
  • This is the second year of issue for the series.
  • This example was struck at the San Francisco branch of the U.S. Mint.
  • The series was struck on the standard 90% pure silver planchet that contains .7734 oz. of bullion.
  • The mintage was 9,110,000 coins.

The Timeless Face of Liberty

Obverse: The obverse image is the portrait of Liberty, as modeled by Miss Anna Williams, a teacher who dismissed this remarkable episode later in her life as "an incident from my youth." Liberty wears a small crown with agricultural elements woven into her hair--which was a nod to America's 19th Century agrarian economy.

Reverse: The reverse features a Bald Eagle gripping arrows and an olive branch. The coin was designed by English immigrant George Morgan as his first assignment for the U.S. Mint.

What is MS66?

Mint State 66 coins tend to be well-struck. They present nice luster and attractive details. There will be some small marks present in the fields or in the devices but they tend to be not distracting in this grade. Eye appeal is a strong requirement for the grade. The presence of NGC's Green Label means that before grading and encapsulation at NGC, numismatic experts at Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA) selected this coin for being a superior example that has elements such as eye appeal, razor-sharp strikes, brilliant luster, or attractive toning.
