Why Purchase This AU53 1879-O VAM-4 Morgan Silver Dollar?

The Morgan silver dollar was first struck by the U.S. Mint in 1878, and the specimen shown here was minted in New Orleans in 1879. The New Orleans Mint struck 2,887,000 Morgan dollars in 1879. However, the specimen offered here displays die variety VAM-4. This variety is also known as the 1879-O O Over Horizontal O. The 1879-O VAM-4 variety is on the Top 100 list, which makes it considerably more appealing than its standard counterpart.

1879-O O Over Horizontal O

These coins are known as Morgan dollars because both sides display the finely detailed work of George T. Morgan. The obverse shows a portrait of Liberty, she has curly hair and is wearing a small cap. The date is inscribed at the bottom of the design.

The design on the reverse shows a bald eagle as it holds its wings high. The mintmark is just above the face value near the bottom of the design. Look closely at the mintmark to see the main characteristic of this variety.

To have this classic silver dollar graded and encapsulated, it was submitted to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). This specimen has some light wear, it was assigned the grade of About Uncirculated 53 (AU53).
