Why purchase this 1879-O Silver Morgan Dollar? The Morgan Silver Dollar is the most beloved coin in American history. Even among non-collectors, Morgans are often passed down for generations. This is largely due to the fact that the coin helped to foster unity and identity for a nation that had recently been ravaged by the Civil War. This piece bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint. Part of a mintage of 2,887,000, it was struck from 26.73 g of .900 fine silver. Featuring the Iconic Liberty Design of George T. MorganThis coin takes its name from George T. Morgan, who designed both faces of it. On the obverse is a left-facing Liberty, whom Morgan modeled off of Anna Willess Williams. Williams was an American style model, which meant a departure from the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek style figure. She wears a Phrygian cap that identifies her as a freed slave and covers much of her long, curly hair. She also dons a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown made of cotton and wheat. The crown represents unity, as cotton is a Southern crop and wheat is a Northern one. Encircling her effigy are thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1879." The stars represent the original states. On the reverse, an open wreath wraps around an eagle. The bird holds arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace. Between the eagle's wings is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR." Uncirculated MS63This coin earned a Mint State 63 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade indicates that a coin has about an average strike and shows no traces of wear. Don't miss your chance to own this Morgan 1879-O Silver Dollar. |
