No coin in American history has become a part of Americana quite like the Morgan Silver Dollar. First issued in the decade following the Civil War, the coin helped the United States to form a common and unique identity.
Iconic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Obverse: Like the reverse, the obverse was designed by George T. Morgan. The obverse bears a left-side portrait of Liberty wearing a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, a Phrygian cap, and a crown of cotton and wheat, a Southern crop and a Northern one. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date "1879," are inscribed along the rim and are joined by thirteen stars.
Reverse: An open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. Above its head is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The design is largely encircled by two rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
