Why add this 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection?

1879 was the second year of issue for the U.S. Mint's Morgan Silver Dollar series. The series is named for its designer, assistant engraver George T. Morgan, who would eventually become Chief Engraver nearly four decades later in 1917. The Morgan Dollar series represents a prosperous and hopeful period in American history, which was attributed to the discovery of vast amounts of silver in the western region of the United States.

  • This 1879 Morgan Dollar was struck from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint.
  • The silver dollar measures 38.1 mm in diameter.
  • Final mintage for the second year of issue release is reported to be 14,806,000 coins.

Magnificent Patriotic Design

Obverse: Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse, her head adorned with a "LIBERTY" inscribed Phrygian cap. The cap is decorated with an agriculturally themed garland composed of oak leaves, wheat grains and cotton blossoms. "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1879" and thirteen stars encircle the portrait.

Reverse: An eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows is centered on the reverse, partially surrounded by a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR" accompany the image.
