Why purchase this flawless 1879 Quintuple Stella gold proof medal?
In 1879, the U.S. Mint proposed production of an international coin comparable to Europe's gold coinage. Although the idea was rejected by Congress, a limited number of patterns known as the Stella and Quintuple Stella were struck. To celebrate the 140th Anniversary of the Stella patterns, the Smithsonian Institution has authorized minting of the Quintuple Stella design. Only five of the original 1879 Quintuple Stellas are known to exist, one of which is part of the Smithsonian's permanent collection. This double dated 1879-2019 proof medal was struck by the Commonwealth Mint from 35 grams of .9999 fine gold, its mintage limited to merely 100 pieces!
Magnificent Quintuple Stella Imagery based on the Type III $20 Gold Liberty design by James B. Longacre
The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a "LIBERTY" inscribed coronet, encircled by an inscription describing the medal's metallic content and weight, separated by thirteen stars and "1879-2019."
Depicted on the reverse is a heraldic eagle with the inscription "DEO EST GLORIA" (God is Glory) replacing the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Additionally inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "DOUBLE EAGLE."
