Why add this 1879 Liberty Seated Silver Dime to your collection?

The Liberty Seated Dime Series underwent several minor design changes during its period of minting from 1837-1891. The original Liberty Seated design was created by Christian Gobrecht, based upon a sketch by Thomas Sully, whose inspiration for the imagery was the depiction of Britannia on British coinage. In 1860, the coin's design was updated by James Barton Longacre, moving the legend to the obverse, and modifying the foliage of the reverse wreath from laurel to agricultural varieties. The 1879 dime is struck from 90% silver with a reported mintage of 14,000.

Design inspired by the British Britannia coin

The obverse depicts Liberty seated on a rock looking back over her right shoulder. Her left hand holds a scepter with a Freedom cap at its top, and her right hand supports a striped shield with a banner draped across it inscribed "LIBERTY." The legend present on the obverse is "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "1879."

The reverse contains the denomination "ONE DIME" inscribed at the center of a wreath including wheat and corn ears tied with a ribbon at the base.
