Why does this first year of issue 7/8TF variety Morgan Silver Dollar belong in your collection?

The U.S. Mint introduced the Morgan Silver Dollar series in 1878, featuring patriotic imagery created by George T. Morgan, the assistant engraver who would become the Mint's seventh Chief Engraver in 1917. The series' inaugural year of production was subjected to a design change on the reverse, decreasing the amount of tail feathers on eagle from eight to seven. Initially, the modification was made to existing dies, with varied 7 over 8 Tail Feathers (7/8TF) results. Of the 7/8TF coins, the examples with clear indication of the original eight feather design are identified as "Strong."

  • This Morgan Silver Dollar is certified as the 1878 7/8TF Strong variety.
  • The 38.10 mm diameter coin is a product of the Philadelphia Mint.
  • The silver dollar is struck from 26.73 grams of .900 fine silver.

Imagery Symbolizing Liberty and Freedom

Obverse: The obverse features Lady Liberty facing left, encircled by thirteen stars, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1878." Ms. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap adorned with sprigs of wheat, cotton and oak, along with the word "LIBERTY."

Reverse: A heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows is depicted on the reverse, surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR."
