Minted from 1878 until 1921, the series represents an era of growth, prosperity and hope for the United States of America. Featuring imagery created by George T. Morgan, the series boasts one of the most recognizable designs in U.S. coinage history. The Morgan Dollar measures 38.1 mm in diameter, struck from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver. Produced by the San Francisco Mint with the "S" Mint mark, this inaugural year of issue coin is among a reported final mintage of 9,774,000.
Distinctive Morgan Dollar Design
Lady Liberty is illustrated on the obverse, facing left, her head adorned with a Phrygian cap decorated with oak leaves, cotton bolls and stalks of wheat. The image is accompanied by thirteen stars, along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1878."
On the reverse, a wreath partially surrounds an eagle with an olive branch and arrows in its grasp. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "S."
