Why buy this 1878-S Silver Morgan Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar is a part of Americana unlike any other coin. George T. Morgan's decision to depict Liberty as an American-style figure and include powerful, unifying symbolism for a country that had recently been divided by a civil war helped the nation to heal and come together. This piece bears the San Francisco Mint's "S" mint mark and comes from the first year of issue of the iconic series.
Novel Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Obverse: On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty, whom designer George T. Morgan chose to show as an American-style figure rather than a Greek-style figure, as was tradition. She wears a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, and a crown made from one Northern crop, wheat, and one Southern crop, corn. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1878."
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch within an open wreath. Above the eagle's head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
Beautifully Preserved MS65 with Green Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided this coin's grading information on a green label. The presence of the Green Label indicates that prior to being submitted to NGC for certification, this coin was first selected by industry experts at Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA) for possessing elements like outstanding eye appeal, razor-sharp strike, booming luster, or attractive toning. The NGC then awarded this piece a grade of Mint State 65, thus indicating that the coin was struck well. Only coins that have undergone RARCOA's additional scrutiny on top of NGC's exacting certification process qualify to carry NGC's Green Label.
