Why purchase this 1878 Prooflike Morgan Silver Dollar (8TF)?

No coin in American history holds its place in the psyche of the nation quite like the Morgan Silver Dollar. Collectors and non-collectors alike often pass down the coins, which featured powerful symbols of pride and unity for a nation that was violently divided not long before its first issue. This piece was part of that first issue. It is particularly notable not just for the fact that it came first but also for the fact that it includes a design mistake, an eagle with eight tail feathers. Bald eagles always have an odd number of tail feathers. Struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver, this coin was part of a mintage of 749,500 pieces that were produced by the Philadelphia Mint.

Classic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

This coin takes its name from the man who created the designs on both faces of it, George T. Morgan. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Using Anna Willess Williams as his model, Morgan broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure in favor of showing her as an American-style figure. She wears a Phrygian cap, which shows that she is a freed slave, as well as a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown. The crown is made of cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Encircling her are inscriptions of the date, "1878," one of two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and thirteen stars, which represent the original states.

On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stretches its wings toward the edge while holding arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace. The bird is partially encircled by an open wreath. Between its wings, a ribbon that bears the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," unfurls. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
