This example was struck at the Philadelphia Branch of the U.S. Mint. 1878 was the first year of issue for the Morgan Dollar.
This Eagle has a Problem!
In real life, the bald eagle has seven tail feathers. That is the crucial bit of information you need to know here. The pattern coins for this George T. Morgan design had the correct number of tail feathers on the reverse but, somewhere along the way, the production dies were engraved with the incorrect number of tail feathers -- eight. The obverse features Lady Liberty in left-facing profile. The reverse features the iconic American bald eagle, proud of his eight feathered tail!
Solidly Collectible MS64
MS64 coins are appealing examples of an issue. These coins will have some light contact marks that will tend to be on less obvious areas of the design and will have bright Mint luster. Overall, they are very solid candidates to include in any high-quality collection.
