Why add this 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection of historic American coinage?
The Morgan Silver Dollar series was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1878. This first year of issue example features the original design for the coin, in which the reverse eagle was illustrated with eight tail feathers. Considered by some to look unnatural, the eight tail feather design was modified to depict seven before the end of the series' inaugural year. This coin represents one of the 749,500 minted prior to the design change. The 1878 dated Eight Tail Feather (8TF) Morgan Silver Dollar coin measures 38.1 mm in diameter, struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver.
Patriotic Silver Dollar Design by George T. Morgan
Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse, her head adorned with a "LIBERTY" inscribed headband and a garland of leaves and blooms. The portrait is surrounded by thirteen stars, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1878."
A bald eagle featuring the coveted eight tail feather design is depicted on the reverse, grasping an olive branch and three arrows. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR."
