Why add this first year of issue Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection?
Several different varieties of Morgan Silver Dollar were released by the U.S. Mint during the series' inaugural year of issue in 1878. The original design by George T. Morgan featured an eagle on the reverse with eight tail feathers. Deemed to have an unnatural appearance, the number of feathers was reduced to seven by the end of the year. In the transitional period, the design was modified to the actual dies, producing the 7 over 8 Tail Feathers (7/8TF) variety with multiple results. Morgan Dollars such as this one, identified as "7/8TF Weak," were struck with a die clearly altered to show seven feathers, with only a minute trace of the original eight remaining visible.
Gorgeous Patriotic Design
The obverse features Lady Liberty facing left, encircled by thirteen stars, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1878." A heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and three arrows is depicted on the reverse, surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR."
