Why add this first year of issue 7/8TF variety 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection of precious metal treasures?
The Morgan Silver Dollar series was launched by the U.S. Mint in 1878. The coin featured designs created by George T. Morgan, the assistant engraver who would become the Mint's seventh Chief Engraver in 1917. After the initial release of the coin, the decision was made to modify the reverse image to reflect a decrease in the number of tail feathers on the eagle from eight to seven. To facilitate the change in that first year of issue, the existing dies were altered, which resulted in multiple variants of 7 over 8 Tail Feathers (7/8TF) strikes. On Morgan Dollar coins such as this example, which is identified as "7/8TF Weak," the underlying eight tail feathers are barely visible.

Morgan Dollar Imagery Symbolizing Liberty and Freedom
Obverse: The obverse features Lady Liberty facing left, encircled by thirteen stars, the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date of issue "1878." Ms. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap adorned with the word "LIBERTY," which is further accented with sprigs of wheat, cotton, and oak, in honor of the nation's advancements in agricultural methodology.
Reverse: An eagle is depicted on the reverse holding an olive branch and three arrows, with a ribbon-tied wreath of laurel curving below. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR." The lack of a Mint mark serves as a confirmation of the coin's Philadelphia Mint origin.
