Step back in time to the Reconstruction Era with this 1871 -S Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagle. The period saw some recovery in the South following the devastation of the Civil War. This coin is part of a series that ran from the mid-19th through the early 20th century and would fit nicely in a collection of historic American coins.
Classic Liberty Design by Christian Gobrecht
Obverse: The obverse bears a left-side portrait of Liberty by Christian Gobrecht. She wears a coronet that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and the date, "1871."
Reverse: On Gobrecht's reverse, an eagle spreads its wings while guarding a union shield. It also holds arrows and an olive branch. Along the rim are inscriptions that provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "2 1/2 D." Christian Gobrecht was the third US Mint Chief Engraver. He is best known for his Seated Liberty designs.

This grade comes provided on NGC's Green Label, which was the product of a collaboration between Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA) and NGC. (RARCOA) first determines that the coin meets a set of guidelines pertaining to elements such as strike, luster, toning, and eye-appeal, before it is then submitted to grading where NGC experts provide the grade and encapsulate the coin for collectors to admire.
