First Year of Issue MS63 1878 Morgan Dollar from the Legendary Carson City Mint

The Morgan silver dollar is among the most popular classic US coins. It was first issued for circulation in 1878 and many are fascinated by them because of their association with the Wild West. This 1878 Morgan dollar was actually struck at the Carson City Mint. It had a final mintage of 2,212,000 coins. Coins from the Carson City branch of the US Mint are always in demand.

Iconic American Design

The Morgan silver dollar gets its name from the man who designed it, George T. Morgan. When this coin was designed it was typical for a single artist to create the obverse and reverse designs. The obverse of this silver dollar shows his depiction of Liberty wearing a cap.

The design on the reverse features a bald eagle in a very powerful looking position. Its wings are partially spread and it can be seen holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. Below the eagle there is a wreath and beneath the wreath is the "CC" Mint mark.
