Why order this 1878-CC Silver Morgan Dollar?

For decades, the General Services Administration (GSA) hoarded silver dollars, keeping many in uncirculated condition. When the coins were finally sold, it dramatically changed the relative scarcity of Morgans in Mint State. Fewer than 61,000 1878-CC Morgans were in the hoard, compared to nearly a million of some other issues. Accordingly, this coin would make a fantastic addition to any Morgan collection. It bears the "CC" mint mark of the Carson City Mint, where it was struck from .7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver.

Historic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

The 1878 Morgan made history thanks to designer George T. Morgan's selection of an American-style model for Liberty, Anna Willess Williams. Prior to that point, Greek-style models were typically chosen. Morgan shows the figure with long hair that is mostly covered by a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. She also wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name and a crown made of two staple American crops, cotton and wheat. Thirteen stars join the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and the date, "1878," on the rim.

On the reverse, an eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and a preference for peace, on the reverse. The bird has its wings spread upward in a V-shape. Between them is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," while an open wreath partially encircles the bird. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."

Beautifully Preserved MS62 with GSA Holder

This coin comes set in a holder that is reserved for coins that were part of the GSA hoard. It earned a Mint State 62 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it has about an average strike and shows no traces of wear.
