Why add the 1878-2020 Smithsonian - Morgan's Gold Eagle Ultra High Relief 1 oz Gold Proof Medal Scarce and Unique Coin Division NGC PF70 UC Black Core Holder to your collection?
This 1878-2020 Smithsonian - Morgan's Gold Eagle Ultra High Relief 1 oz. Gold Proof Medal was graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) at the astoundingly beautiful Proof 70 (PF70) Ultra Cameo (UC) level. It is presented in the visually appealing Black Core Holder by our Scarce and Unique Coin Division. The medal is struck to Ultra High Relief Proof Quality on .999 pure Gold 1 oz. Piedfort or "double thick" planchets. The tiny mintage consists of only 150 medals. The Judd-1581 pattern coin of the same design sold for $475,000 over thirty years ago. This issue was authorized by the Smithsonian who holds the original in their peerless National Numismatic Collection. The historic nature of this issue cannot be overstated. The minting equipment used by England's Commonwealth Mint to strike the coin was from the Birmingham Mint. That mint was acquired by Commonwealth and was where George Morgan apprenticed before he came to the United States in 1876.
Morgan's Rare $10 Eagle Design
The obverse of this breathtaking Morgan Eagle Pattern Proof features the head of Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap. It is similar to the Morgan Silver Dollar obverse. Each medal is hallmarked by the Commonwealth Mint, the Smithsonian Institute and the Queen's Assay Office at Sheffield Rose. The medals also include a .999 Gold purity mark. The dominant image on the reverse is a bald eagle with wings spread as he clutches an olive branch and three arrows in his talons. The reverse of the medal could not legally be struck bearing the original denomination. This detail has been modified to read "EAGLE" -the Numismatic nickname for the denomination. The remaining design elements are faithful to the original pattern design and resemble the Morgan Silver Dollar reverse.
Beautiful Matte Proof PF70 UC Medal
Proof 70 coins and medals are flawless examples. Ultra Cameo refers specifically to the highly desirable contrast between the design details and the fields of the issue. Each piece is displayed in a remarkable wooden presentation case and includes a numbered mint certificate of authenticity and a story card detailing the history of Morgan's Pattern Eagle.
