Produced by the U.S. Mint 1878-1921, coins of the Morgan Dollar series are a popular choice among numismatic collectors. The series is known for its classically styled personification of liberty created by its namesake George T. Morgan. The five coins included in this set represent the first five years of the series, dated 1878 through 1882, each struck from 0.7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint.
Morgan's Stunning Silver Dollar Design
The portrait of Lady Liberty adorns the obverse, illustrated wearing a "LIBERTY" crown and a Phrygian cap, encircled by "E PLURIBUS UNUM," thirteen stars and the date. Liberty's hair is ornamented with grains of wheat, oak leaves and cotton bolls to symbolize the importance of the nation's agricultural advancements.
A magnificently detailed eagle appears on the reverse, grasping an olive branch and three arrows. The patriotic image is surrounded by a laurel wreath, along with the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "ONE DOLLAR."
