William III took the throne of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1849, and ruled until his death in 1890. At that time, rule of the Netherlands transferred to Queen Emma as regent for eight years, until his daughter Wilhelmina reached the age of eighteen in 1898. The national currency of the Netherlands was based on the Guilder, or Gulden, until it was replaced by the Euro in 2002. This 10 Guilder coin, minted by the Royal Dutch Mint in 1876 during the reign of King William III, is struck from 0.1947 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold, and measures 22.5mm in diameter.

Coat of Arms and King of the Netherlands

The effigy of King William III adorns the obverse, accompanied by Dutch inscriptions which translate as "God be with us" and "King William III." The reverse depicts the Netherlands Coat of Arms, with the coin's denomination "10 G," "1876," and "KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN" (Kingdom of the Netherlands).
