Why purchase this 25 Cent 1876 California Gold Indian?

California fractional gold pieces make for excellent conversation pieces, as well as educational tools. They were introduced during the California Gold Rush to deal with a shortfall in small coins. Large coins were available, but smaller transactions were being conducted with coins from around the world brought by migrants. They were often traded based on size rather than intrinsic value because of the confusion caused by the variety. Gold pieces like this were struck to provide a universal standard, though they traded for above their face values. There were a variety of these struck, with each one identified by a code today. This one's is BG-799.

Stunning Native American Design

On the obverse is a left-side profile of an American Indian woman. She has long hair that falls down over her neck, and she wears a feathered headdress. The date, "1876," is inscribed at the bottom, and thirteen stars spread throughout the rest of the rim.

On the reverse, the face value is shown as a fraction, "1/4 DOLLAR." Below is an abbreviation of the territory in which the piece was to be used, "CAL." These inscriptions are encircled by a wreath.

Beautiful Uncirculated MS62

The experts at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) awarded this piece a Mint State 62 grade. That means that the piece has no wear.
