Why buy this Silver 1874-S Trade Dollar with Chop Marks?

This 1874-S Trade Dollar comes from just the second issue in the coin's short, fascinating history. The coin was issued mainly for international trade in the years following the Civil War. This coin was struck from 27.22 g of .900 fine silver at the San Francisco Mint. It bears that mint's "S" mint mark at the base of the reverse design.

Chop Marks

When these coins were encountered by Chinese merchants, they would punch characters into the surface of the coin to test the silver purity and also to promote their business. This coin has two such marks on the obverse, and one on the reverse. To find a Trade Dollar with Chop Marks in Uncirculated condition is a rare event indeed!

Powerful Liberty Design by William Barber

The obverse features an image of a seated Liberty looking out over the ocean, which is to the left of the coin. She is extending an olive branch toward the Orient. Behind her is a sheaf of wheat, which represents the nature of the coin's inception, i.e. the facilitation of trade. Thirteen stars arch over the image, while the date, "1874," is provided below it.

The reverse features a common theme in American coinage: an eagle guarding a union shield. The bird spreads its wings to its sides while holding arrows, symbols of military readiness, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace. Under the bird is an inscription of the precise weight and purity of the coin, which was particularly important given the purpose of the issue. That inscription reads, "420 GRAINS 900 FINE." "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed on the top half of the rim, and "TRADE DOLLAR" is included below it.

Beautifully Preserved MS62

This coin received a Mint State 62 grade from Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Coins in MS62 condition lack any signs of wear. The presence of Chop Marks is also noted on the label.
