Why add this Silver Proof 1873 Seated Liberty Quarter to your collection?
The U.S. Mint's Seated Liberty Silver Quarter series was minted for circulation from 1838 until 1891. Regular, annual production of a proof version of the coin began in 1858, continuing until the conclusion of the series. The
changeover from a Closed 3 in the date to an Open 3, occurred between the time that the first proof quarter dollars of 1873 were struck, and the time that arrowheads were added to denote a minor weight change. Thus, all of the No Arrows quarters of this date have the Closed 3, which the coiner had found objectionable, due to its resemblance to an 8. Mintages fluctuated greatly, from a low of just 300 in 1858, to a high of 1,355 in 1880. This 1873 dated Seated Liberty Proof Quarter falls at the lower end of the scale, its mintage reported to be just 600 coins. The 24.3 mm diameter quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 0.20 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver.
