Why purchase this Seated Liberty 1872 Half Dime?
The half dime was one of the first coins issued by the United States. This 1872 piece comes from the second to last issue in the series. Nickels completely replaced the half dime in 1874. This coin offers a unique connection to a bygone era in America's rich numismatic history.
Exquisite Seated Liberty Design by James Longacre
Obverse: James Longacre's obverse design shows Liberty sitting down with her head turned to face the left side of this face. She holds a pole that has a Liberty cap at the top with one hand and balances a union shield with the other. Inscriptions on this face read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "1872."
Reverse: On the reverse, which was also designed by Longacre, the coin's face value, "HALF DIME," is inscribed in large font in the center. It is encircled by a wreath.
