Why buy this 1871 California 25 Cent Gold Liberty?

California fractional gold pieces make fascinating conversations pieces for collectors who are interested in monetary history. The California Gold Rush led to extremely fast growth in the territory. Large coins were readily available, but there was a dearth of smaller coins. Instead, coinage from around the world was often used in commerce. Because of the complexity of weights, intrinsic values, and other factors, this caused a tremendous amount of confusion. California fractional gold pieces were introduced to solve this problem, and they traded for above their intrinsic values. This octagonal piece is identified as BG-717.

Striking Young Woman Design

The obverse features a left-side portrait of a young woman that is similar to the way that Liberty appeared on many American coins. She has long hair and wears a headband. Nine stars spread throughout the rim.

The reverse and date are inscribed in the middle of the reverse. A "1" is inscribed above a "4," indicating a fraction, and the word "DOLLAR" is below. "1871" appears below that. These are largely encircled by an open wreath.

Well Preserved MS63
