Classic Seated Liberty Design by Christian Gobrecht
Obverse: Like the reverse, the obverse was designed by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty sits with her head turned to the left side of this face. She holds a pole with a Phrygian cap on the top with her left hand and balances a union shield with her right. Thirteen stars represent the original states along the rim, and the date, "1869," is inscribed at the bottom.
Reverse: A union shield is guarded by an eagle that holds a union shield and arrows on the reverse. A banner with the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," unfurls above its head. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOL." are inscribed along the rim.
