The U.S. Mint produced the Gold $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle series from 1850 until 1907. This example was minted in 1861, the year the volatile Civil War era of American history began. This 34 mm diameter Liberty Head Double Eagle is one of the 2,976,453 produced by the Philadelphia Mint in 1861, struck from 0.9675 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.

Patriotic Design by the U.S. Mint's fourth Chief Engraver James B. Longacre

The obverse features Lady Liberty, her head adorned with a crown bearing the inscription "LIBERTY." The portrait is framed by thirteen stars, with "1861" inscribed below.

The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle behind a striped shield, an olive branch and arrows in its grasp, with curved scrolls on either side containing the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS" and "UNUM." "IN GOD WE TRUST" appears within a thirteen star oval above the eagle. The powerful design is encircled by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TWENTY DOLLARS."
