These 1861 $10 Obsolete Banknotes issued by the Bank of the State of South Carolina Columbia are available to you in the Fine to Extremely Fine grades. These deeply historic notes were part of a hoard of Civil War era notes. South Carolina in 1861 was a happening place: the first shots of the Civil War were shot there and the state seceded from the Union. This note was issued in a state that was one of the original American Colonies and one of the first to join the Confederacy.

Detailed Sailing Ship Engraving

The obverse depicts sailing ships in a highly detailed engraving, or vignette, located above the bank name. Depictions of the allegorical ladies, Liberty and Justice appear on either side of the ships. The denomination "Ten" is printed in large red letters below the bank name. Each note is also hand-signed and dated by the issuing bank's officers.
