Why purchase this 1859-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle?

This Liberty Head Double Eagle was struck just two years before the outbreak of the Civil War, making it especially appealing for collectors with an interest in the time period. The coin was part of the tenth issue of the coin. It bears the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint, where it was struck from .9675 oz of .900 fine gold. It was part of a mintage of 636,445 pieces.

Striking Liberty Design by James Longacre

Both faces of this coin feature the designs of U.S Mint Chief Engraver James Longacre. The obverse features Liberty in left-side profile wearing a coronet that bears her name. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars, one for each state, and the date, "1859."

Based on the Great Seal of the United States, the reverse features an eagle guarding a union shield. Thirteen stars form an oval above its head. Rim inscriptions offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "TWENTY D."

Well Preserved XF40

The experts at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) graded this coin Extremely Fine 40 (XF40). To receive that grade, a coin must have all design elements still visible.
