Step back in time to the reign of one of the most consequential figures in French history with this gold coin. The coin dates to 1855, just a few years after Napoleon III led a coup that enabled him to become Emperor of the French in 1852. He would go on to modernize the French economy and rebuild the nation's capital. The coin was struck from just over 32 g of .900 fine gold and was part of a mintage of 50,830 pieces.

Powerful Napoleon III Design by Jean-Jacques Barre

Both faces of this coin bear the designs of Jean-Jacques Barre. On the obverse is a right-side portrait of Napoleon III. It is flanked by inscriptions that identify him and his title, "NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR." "BARRE" is inscribed below the effigy.

The reverse is dominated by the emblem of the Second French Empire. An eagle features on a shield at the center. The shield stands against a background of a crowned cloak. Inscriptions on this face read, "EMPIRE FRANCAIS," "100 FR," and "A 1855."
