Why buy this Type 2 1855 $1 Gold Indian Princess?

The Gold Dollar was issued from 1849-1889. During that time, three types were issued. This is the Type 2 version, which was only issued for two years, 1854-1855. Not only was the coin issued for just two years, but many pieces were melted down in the ensuing years. Accordingly, the coin is a prize find for many collectors, especially in AU55 condition. The diameter on the Type 2 is 15mm, as opposed to 13mm on the Type 1. This coin was part of a mintage of 758,269 pieces, each of which was struck on a 1.67 g planchet of .900 fine gold at the Philadelphia Mint.

Exquisite Indian Princess Design by James Longacre

On the obverse is James Longacre's famous Indian Princess design. Longacre modeled the figure off of Venus Accroupie, a Roman marble figure. Rendered in left-side profile, she has long, curly hair that covers the back of her neck. Her headdress includes several feathers, making it similar to those worn by some Native American tribes. Arching over her is the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."

Longacre also designed the reverse, on which a wreath of cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco encircles a pair of inscriptions. They offer the coin's face value, "1 DOLLAR," and its date, "1855."

Beautifully Preserved AU55

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) graded this coin Almost Uncirculated 55. That means that it retains full detail and considerable luster, with just a touch of wear on the high points.
